GHMC council approves ₹8440 crore budget
Hyderabad: There was chaos in the GHMC general body meeting held on Thursday. A heated argument broke out between the BRS party and Congress party corporators. The Corporators of both the parties pushed each other. This led to an atmosphere of tension in the meeting.
As soon as the meeting began on Thursday morning, the Council paid tributes to former prime minister Manmohan Singh and industrialist Ratan Tata. Later, GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi said the budget would be presented in the Council. However, BRS party and BJP corporators objected to it. They insisted on speaking on people's issues first. However, Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi presented the GHMC budget with an outlay of Rs 8,440 crore. The members were asked to speak on the budget by her later. There was chaos in the meeting as the BRS party corporators surrounded the Mayor's podium.
There was a scuffle between the BRS and Congress corporators at the podium. The BRS corporators protested demanding a discussion on the implementation of the six guarantees. In return, the Congress corporators raised slogans demanding a discussion on the budget. The Mayor adjourned the House for five minutes as there was chaos in the House.
The BRS and BJP corporators protested even as the meeting resumed. Some BRS party corporators surrounded the Mayor's podium in protest with placards. They were stopped by the Congress corporators and placards were torn. This led to an argument between the corporators of the two parties.
Four corporators from the BRS party were taken out by the marshals. The police have taken them into custody. Protesting against this, other BRS party corporators surrounded the Mayor's podium and demanded an apology. The detained corporators should be brought back and the House should be held. They said the question hour should be held and public issues should be discussed.
This led to chaos in the House. Though the Mayor had offered to discuss people's issues, the BRS party corporators did not give up. While expressing her impatience, she directed the police to bring back the corporators, who were taken away by the marshals into the House. On the other hand, the four corporators refused to come in and an argument ensued. Following this, the Mayor suspended all the BRS party corporators. When they were sent out by the marshals, they protested in front of the GHMC office. The police have taken them into custody.
The Council approved the Rs 8,440-crore budget for the financial year 2025-26 without discussion amid the din at the meeting. Earlier, BJP corporators had come to the GHMC office begging. They raised slogans demanding that Gosha Mahal Stadium not be demolished and that Osmania Hospital not be built there. They demanded that construction be carried out in the area behind Osmania Hospital.
